Last Monday marked a brilliant first for the club: our inaugural Women’s 10. Eight women on the start line, a lovely atmosphere at the Roebuck, and just the kind of supportive, give-it-a-go energy we hoped for. It’s something we’ll do again, for sure.

Next up for the TTs is the 2-up Evening 10 on Monday, and more battling for points in the points competition.

In other news, we’ve got a packed Committee Meeting summary, a bit of vintage steel, a new bike day and one last chance to grab the Classic kit.

☕️ Sunday Social - Sunday 21 June

Paget will once again be demonstrating his extensive knowledge of Sussex café culture by leading this week’s ride to King John's Nursery, Etchingham.

  • Roll out: 8:30 am

  • Duration: Approx. 4 hours, including the coffee stop.

  • Start Location: Boots, Uckfield

  • Dress Code: Club kit expected

Deep breath, flatter those eyelids and propose to your prospective partner for this week’s can’t-miss competition. If they say no, well there’s plenty more bikes in the shed 😳.

Last Week’s Results

You had to be there; you really did.

Eight women made for a fabulous competition on Monday evening in our inaugural Women’s 10.

Olivia Webb rode away with the honours in a time of 26:06. Maddy Lee-Smith, riding her first TT in seven years, came in second in 26:12, and Georgina Wise claimed third in 27:31.

More than that, though, the event was about creating an environment where women cyclists of all abilities felt encouraged, supported and ready to give it a go. Well done to everybody who pinned on a number.

As to the men’s competition, well, you’ll have to click on the results to find out. This one was all about the women.

Points Competition

With five qualifying events now run, the points competition is really hotting up.

Calum Elms takes another maximum and moves up to second overall, closing the gap to Dan Street to six points. Chris Hurcomb also continues his strong run and moves into a clear third place. Dan Street still leads comfortably on 40 points, helped by the fact he has scored well in every event so far. You have to be in it to win it!

Next Week

Next week, it’s the 2-up competition, so find yourself a partner and get your names on the list. Same-sex and mixed pairings are allowed, and heck, if you think you can keep up with a TT bike on a road bike, go for it - it’s only a bit of fun after all.

Solo riders are welcome to put down a time and accumulate points. We’ve devised a simple handicap system to help level the playing field with the pairs, which you can read about in the rules.

Committee Meeting

If you thought the Women’s 10 was exciting, then you should have been at the latest Committee Meeting.

There were so many ideas, and so much to discuss that we literally ran out of time to cover them all.

Membership is up again, the new points competition is generating interest, Strava is being opened up as a promotional channel, and the club has agreed a budget for a GoPro-style camera to capture more ride content.

There was also discussion on future women’s rides, introductory off-road sessions, the future of the Crits, an end-of-summer ride/social, a possible club cap design competition, and a volunteering WhatsApp group. Phew, you can read the full minutes on the website.

The next meeting is on 22 September at The Dorset in Lewes. Tickets go on sale soon.

🎉 Peter Baker

Peter Baker always looks magnificent, but he looked even more magnificent than usual when he turned up at The Forge last Saturday with his vintage Gios Professional Columbus SL steel bike.

Gios was one of the most iconic bike brands of the 1970s and 1980s, largely due to its connection with the professional Brooklyn team, which, although an American company, was based in Italy.

The bike and Brooklyn jersey are Peter’s homage to Roger De Vlaeminck and the Brooklyn team, who were a thorn in the side of the great Eddy Merckx in the 1970s.

Keep them coming, Peter. We love seeing them 😍.

The only time Neil Edwards is normally found in a field is when he has overcooked a corner, which, some say, is surprisingly often.

But something has clearly changed. Following a perfectly executed pincer movement by Mugs Gohl and Chris Hurcomb, he has been persuaded to invest in an XC/MTB and is expected out on off-road rides shortly.

Top tip: don’t follow too closely behind him.
