Rolling News

Fast times, revised standings, a new course record in the Evening 10s, one frankly heroic off-road escapade, and a new bike that just might be trying to beat Elon Musk to Mars.

Add in the usual weekend rides and a gentle reminder on TT regulations, and there’s plenty to keep your mind off the World Cup for another week at least.

🚴 Forge Ride - Saturday 27 June

🏁 Evening 10 - Monday 29 June

We’re seeing great numbers at these events now, and for good reason - they’re brilliant fun (honestly!). We’re staying on the Ringmer/Laughton course, so make your way to the Roebuck Inn for sign-on.

🏁 Evening 10 Series

This Week’s Results

Monday night’s Evening 10 brought a twist to the series, with the first 2-Up round of the season adding tactics and teamwork to the usual lung-burning effort.

To keep things fair, solo riders were given a handicap against the 2-Up pairings: 7.5% for road bikes and 5% for TT bikes.

Once the calculators had cooled down, it was Calum Elms who came out on top, his impressive solo road bike ride of 21:45 converting to a 2-Up equivalent time of 20:07 🚀.

Adam Goward also made excellent use of the solo road bike handicap, taking second place on adjusted time, just ahead of Chris Hurcomb and Dan Street, who clocked the fastest 2-Up time of the night with 23:22.

The series is flying now, and it’s never too late to be part of it. You can ride, and we’re always in need of marshals. Please raise your hand when the call goes out.

Points Competition

The standings tightened again after Monday’s 2-Up round.

Dan Street still leads on 48 points, but Calum Elms’ win in a new PB and course record of 21:45 moves him to within two points. Chris Hurcomb strengthens his third place, while Peter Baker joins Michael Renardson on 24 points in equal fourth. Neil Edwards remains within touching distance, but will need more than organiser’s influence to trouble the podium.

Next Week

Important news! By popular demand, we’re keeping the rest of this year’s Evening 10s on the new Ringmer/Laughton course 🎉.

The course is producing some fast times, and has much less traffic than the A22. The road surface is appreciably better, too. And that’s before we mention the convenience of the Roebuck Inn for post-ride hydration.

If you haven’t tried a TT yet and are curious what all the fuss is about, this is an excellent course for giving it a go. Treat yourself, put your name down for next Monday.

🤩 Dan’s Great Escapade

Continuing our theme of completely bonkers endurance rides, Dan Gohl recently completed the Great British Escapade, a 480 km self-supported off-road adventure across the North and South Downs, starting and finishing in Canterbury.

Riding through the night, tackling singletrack, bridleways and road sections, and stopping only for checkpoints, Dan completed the route with long-time friend Joe Cox in 26 hours, setting a new Fastest Known Time along the way.

✨ New Bike Day

Ryan Machin’s latest build is an aero gravel bike bought primarily for racing. His first impressions are “it's an absolute rocket ship!”

Ryan’s custom-built Tavelo Grow. Estimated cost: just over £3K

Frame: Tavelo Grow

Wheels: Zen Carbon. 45 mm deep, front 29 mm internal, rear 27 mm internal.

Groupset: SRAM Rival E1 XPLR 13-speed 46T chainring. 10-46 cassette.

Tyres: Continental Dubnital 50 mm

Weight: 7.9 kg

Ryan says: “If you could own just one bike, I really think this might be it. Whack a set of 35mm slicks for some comfy road miles, or swap in some big chunky mountain bike tyres (clearance for up to 2.4" up front), and you've got all bases covered”.

That's two Chinese frames Ryan has built up this year. He says an MTB might be next!

Regulations for TTs

A gentle reminder that CTT regulations require all riders to have a helmet, and working front and rear lights attached to their bikes (not their helmets or bodies).

We have no discretion in this and, unfortunately, had to disappoint a couple of entrants this week.

Don’t forget - it’s more than a regulation, it’s basic safety.

London to Amsterdam

When Rolling News lands this week, Neil Edwards will be pedalling his way to Amsterdam to help women survivors of domestic physical, sexual and mental abuse.

Three sweltering back-to-back 100-mile days should see him arrive in Amsterdam by early afternoon on Saturday.

Please follow the link to support Neil’s endeavours.

Every penny of your donation will go to the charity, as all ride costs have been covered ❤️.
