This week we’re covering all terrains: off-road on Saturday, social miles on Sunday, another Evening 10 on Monday, and a few Wanderers heading to Pippingford for some gravel racing … or grovelling.

There’s also the small matter of England v Mexico at 1 am on Monday morning, so pace yourselves: it’s going to be a long weekend.

🌳 Off-Road Ride - Saturday 4 July

It’s knobbly tyres time this Saturday, with Richard Roberts leading a 40 km no-drop ride that should suit a wide range of abilities.

  • Roll out: 8:30 am

  • Duration: Approx. 3.5 hours, including the coffee stop.

  • Start Location: Bake Out, Lewes

  • Dress Code: Club kit preferred

☕️ Sunday Social - Sunday 5 July

Ash Preston is leading a ride west towards picturesque Slaugham and Warninglid. The coffee stop - like Thomas Tuchel’s strategy for the Mexico game - remains under wraps as we go to press.

  • Roll out: 8:30 am

  • Duration: Approx. 4 hours, including the coffee stop.

  • Start Location: Boots, Uckfield

  • Dress Code: Club kit expected

🏁 Evening 10 - Monday 6 July

Talking of the Mexico game, don’t stay up too late on Sunday. The Roebuck Inn is the place to be on Monday evening for round #6 of the Evening 10 series.

This Week’s Results

Monday’s Evening 10 #5 saw another strong turnout on the Ringmer/Laughton course, with some very quick times chalked up by the regular riders finding their form.

Calum Elms set the LWCC pace in 22:12 on a road bike. Richard Burchett was the next Wanderer home, clocking 22:58 on a TT bike, followed by Chris Hurcomb in a PB of 23:56 and Dan Street in 24:03, both on road bikes.

There was a particularly tight scrap for the final placing points, with Adam Goward (RB) taking fifth Wanderer by just one second from Peter Baker (TT).

In the women’s competition, Maddy Lee-Smith and Alice Gilmore both delivered strong rides, continuing their consistent form and adding valuable points to their standings.

Points Competition

Now that we’re a few rounds into the series, we can separate the points into Road Bike, TT Bike and Women’s competitions. This gives a much clearer picture of the season so far, with riders competing against others in comparable categories.

Dan Street currently leads the road bike standings, Peter Baker has opened a commanding gap among the TT bikes, and Alice Gilmore sits just ahead of Olivia Webb in a very close women’s competition.

The Tour de France starts this Saturday, 4 July, with a Team Time Trial in Barcelona. The Black Horse, Lewes will be showing all stages live in the back bar, and we recommend going along.

This week’s ’not to be missed’ stages are:

Stage 1 - Saturday 4 July - Opening day Team Time Trial - Barcelona (a TTT is always a spectacle)
Stage 6 - Thursday 9 July - Pyrenees mountain stage (including the Col du Tourmalet)

Gravelling (or Grovelling)

Continuing this week’s off-road theme, several members have entered the Destination Gravel event at Pippingford this Sunday - some to race, some to just experience it.

If you’re at a loose end, come along and cheer them on. There are five- and 10-lap races of approx 50 km and 100 km.

Racing starts at 9:30 and should last several hours.

London to Amsterdam

A heartfelt thank you from Neil to everybody who kindly supported his London to Amsterdam ride last weekend.

Despite temperatures exceeding 40°C at times, he got there intact and has so far raised £1,855 for The Big Cycle Fundraiser.
